How to sell a backpack

I want to use this mundane example as an exploration of the modern internet economy.

Artisan backpacks. Repairable. High quality. Customizable. And Advertised with ASMR artisan content. Huh.

How do you make money selling something when you aren't able to compete on cost? You have to compete on other features:

  • design
  • durability
  • repairability
  • modularity
  • customization
  • sustainability

It almost seems like you have to go after people who want to make their own backpacks, provide a whole framework (somehow in a thoroughly engaging way) that convinces them of the optimality of your design, and then you just sell it to them. Weird. Maybe you could also sell the kits? I do like the idea of tearing down the wall between customer and artisan, especially for these kind of basic essential type goods. It's all just made out of fibers, you should feel ready and cable of repairing, customizing and owning your objects.

A Design System

The backpack is apart of a whole EDC environment. Do you also have a sling? Do you travel with a carry-on? What's the purpose of this bag?

What's the traditional, time-tested solution in the space? The messenger bag, the duffle bag, the trunk.

When military equipage is settled on, what framework do they have in place?

To me, the optimal solution would be something that accomodates both one-bagging, normal life, and camping. I want to one-bag on Ryan Air, but I also want to look cool taking my laptop to the library. I think this means that I need something like an expandable bag, and and expandable sling/messenger.

Materials

Sturdy canvas. Simple, universal. If it ever needs patching it'll look even cooler.

Zippers can be problematic, can look into alternative fasteners.
