We're Running Out of Time to Manifest the Potential of the Open Internet
I don't have the time to polish this, but I want to get the thoughts down:
- The open internet creates a distributed infrastructure for information exchange and organization
- It could provide independent "independent media" because of the zero-cost to virality dynamics
There are of course decent arguments to close down the internet, especially with genAI, foreign influence campaigns etc. The real meaning of "Open Internet" is that it isn't totally captured by centralized control, that there's still the possibility of it being another force in an ecosystem of competing incentives, safeguarding stability and justice.
We're running out of time because as of Summer 2025, there are several (simultaneous) barriers to the open internet being ennacted by the UK, EU, Australia, and the US.
The open internet is not the same thing as having this low-security digital environment where influence campaigns and botnets can run wild
